10 Useful Tips for Working Remotely in Times of the Pandemic

Remote work is a working style that allows professionals to work outside of a traditional office environment.

This current crisis that we are all experiencing is extremely difficult as a lot of adjustments have been made for everyone. If you’re new to working remotely full time, this will not be easy. You may not have been prepared to turn your living space into your workspace for the foreseeable future. If you enjoyed having daily social interaction with co-workers, you can start to feel alone and isolated during these times.

    Working From Home

Here are the 10 tips for working remotely that will make your experience better and less stressful:

    Look for a better place

You can focus on work if you have a good workspace. Designate a specific area in your home to get work done. If you can find a spot where there is natural light, even better. Also, make sure your background is presentable so that you won’t mind having others seeing what’s behind you while you’re on video call.

    Maintain a consistent routine

Try to wake up at the same time every day and treat weekdays just as you did before when you are working in a corporate world. For most people, the morning is the time to get serious work done, so try to complete any difficult tasks as early as possible once you start work. Set a schedule and stick to it. Having clear guidelines for when to work and when to call it a day helps many remote workers maintain a work-life balance.

Set Ground Rules with the People you live with

Set ground rules with other people in your home or with who you share your space when you work. Let them know when to leave you alone. In that way, you can focus more on your work and not be distracted. If you share a space with another adult who’s working from home as well, you may have to negotiate quiet times, meeting times, and any shared equipment, like desks and chairs.

    Schedule Breaks

If you work for an organization, you should know the policy on break times and take them. If you’re self-employed, give yourself adequate time during the day for time out from the computer screen and phone. In this way, you can relax and refresh your mind for a while.

Socialize and stay connected With Colleagues

Online tools like Slack not only help workflow but can also serve as social outlets. It’s better to actually speak to your work colleagues, so make some phone calls or plan video calls to check in with people. Teleconferences add another sensory element to your interactions. Experts say video conferencing while working from home helps fight isolation while enhancing team unity and productivity.

Make time for physical and creative activities

If it’s possible and you can maintain a safe distance from others, try to get outside for some fresh air when you can. Even if you are working at home, plan your schedule correctly and go for a walk outside your house or sit outside in the garden during your breaks. This is important so you can relax, refresh your mind and not overload your thinking.

    Take Sick Days

When you’re not feeling well and feel that bad, take time off. If sick days are part of your compensation package, take the time off that you need. Not taking it is like throwing away money! If you’re freelance or self-employed without paid sick time, it can be tempting to power through illnesses and keep working. Remember that for your long-term wellness and productivity, it’s best to rest and get better so that you can get back to work at full capacity. If you can, take it easy and try to do the smaller tasks that won’t take too long in the meantime.

    Be Positive

In remote work settings, everyone must be positive. Embrace how you are working and accept whatever it takes. Be thankful that you’re working so that you can provide for yourself and for your loved ones.

End Your Day With a Routine

As you should start your day with a routine, end your day with a routine. Shut down your computer and do something you’ll enjoy to wind down from your day. For example, going for a walk outside with your dog, working out, listening to music or watching a TV show. Even if you have things to do after work, try to fit in the routine at the end of the working day for a short amount of time.

    Focus on the bigger picture

This is a stressful time for everyone, so it’s important to remember to have fun. You may even discover new, funny quirks about your significant other while working remotely. At the end of the day, try to embrace the additional quality time you have with your family or loved ones.
